Guwahati, June 22: In a major boost to Assam’s international connectivity ambitions, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Air India will launch direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi from August 4.
Sharing the development on social media, Sarma said the new non-stop services would further strengthen Guwahati’s position as a key gateway connecting Northeast India to the world.
“Opening new avenues to connect Assam to the global community! From 4th August, Air India will commence direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” the Chief Minister posted on X.

With the launch of the new routes, Guwahati Airport will now have direct international connectivity to four countries — the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Singapore and Bhutan.
Sarma said the state government is now working towards securing direct air links with Vietnam as part of its larger strategy to position Guwahati as a major travel and transit hub for Southeast Asia.
The announcement comes just days after several European Union member states relaxed travel advisories for Assam, following similar moves by Australia and Japan. The Chief Minister described both developments as signs of growing international confidence in Assam’s safety, connectivity and economic potential.
“There was a time when members of the international community advised their citizens against visiting Assam. Today, several of our global partners are lifting such advisories and embracing the multitude of opportunities Assam offers,” Sarma said.
The twin developments — improved global perception and expanded international air connectivity — are expected to provide a significant boost to tourism, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges, while reinforcing Guwahati’s emergence as the Northeast’s principal international gateway.
