Shillong, Jan 25: UDP chief adviser and nominated member of the KHADC, Bindo Mathew Lanong, has come down heavily on the Congress party for its failure to resolve the inter-state boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya because it failed follow up on numerous committees it constituted especially when both States had Congress governments for successive terms.
Giving an insight into his latest book titled “Golden Meghalaya”, Lanong cited the constitution of Chandrachur Committee by the Government of Assam and Meghalaya in 1985 to resolve the boundary problem between the two neighbouring states. At that time Congress was in power in Assam, Meghalaya and also at the Centre.
The Chandrachur Committee submitted its report in 1987 but it was never followed, stated the former legislator.
Interestingly, Lanong noted that the committee had only given the views of both the States but did not give any recommendations.
At the same time, the UDP leader also clarified that the hill state leaders accepted the statehood in 1972 despite unresolved borders because they felt they the issues could be addressed later and that gaining statehood was more important.
