Guwahati, Dec 18: The BJP in Assam has begun preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections and is set to contest 102 seats. The party has also indicated that several new faces, including women candidates, will be introduced.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We will contest around 102 or 123 seats. All preparations are done, and our talks with allies are almost settled. Our workers are already on the ground.”
“Our target is to secure over 50 per cent vote share. If the people give us 60 seats and allow us to form the government, that is enough. We are confident that the NDA will form the government,” he added.
The party will hold its state executive meeting in Guwahati on December 26 and 27, with BJP National President JP Nadda, National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh, Assam in-charge Baijayant Panda, and newly elected working president Nitin Navin expected to attend.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Assam on December 20 and 22. During the visit, he will visit the Assam Pradesh BJP headquarters for the first time and inaugurate the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
State BJP president Dilip Saikia said the names of 248 party functionaries have been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office for a proposed organisational review meeting at Vajpayee Bhawan during the visit.
“The list includes Members of Parliament, MLAs, senior party leaders, and district presidents. Modi is expected to spend 30 minutes at the BJP office,” Saikia said.
