Guwahati, March 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the BJP will contest 89 of the 126 Assembly seats in the upcoming elections, leaving the remaining seats for its allies.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said, “The BJP, which has been in power in the state since 2016, will field candidates in 89 constituencies. Of the remaining seats, 26 will go to our ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and 11 to the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The AGP is also likely to announce its candidates on Wednesday.”
Sarma added that the BJP will announce its candidates after a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board on March 18.
“The BJP election committee meeting discussed both the party’s candidate list and seat-sharing arrangements with our alliance partners. The BJP central parliamentary committee will meet on Wednesday evening, following which we will release the list either the same evening or on Thursday morning,” he said.
Voting for all 126 seats in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
