BJP to go alone in 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections

Must read

Shillong, Nov 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya has announced that it will not forge any alliance for the 2023 Assembly elections in the state.

Stating this here on Saturday, BJP Meghalaya unit President Ernest Mawrie said that BJP will not forge alliance because it is a national party and will fight on its own.

He, however, was non-committal on whether his party will contest all 60 seats. “It is too early to say because we have to study and we have to go from one constituency to another. The election committee and state/central leaders will take the decision on how many seats we are going to contest in 2023,” he said.

At the same time, he said the party welcomes Congress leaders or anybody to join its fold.

He also mentioned that there are some MLAs who have met the central leaders but he refrained from naming them.

He, however, revealed that 3-5 Congress MLAs have approached the party.

Stating that the party’s flock is intact, the BJP president said, “They (MLAs) will be with us. They are both very mature politicians so I don’t think that they will switch. Till today we are in touch and we are working together.”

He further claimed, “Hek, who has been appointed as an advisor and a national executive member of the party, is a tall leader of the party and he will remain with us.”

Whether he will contest in the 2023 Assembly polls, Mawrie said, “When the time comes if the party advises me to contest, definitely I will contest.”

He informed as of now, he is working for the party and has completed the formation of the West Shillong mandal while for the North Shillong, the process is going on.
