Shillong, June 16: A boatman and local tour guide at the Umgot River in Dawki is feared to have drowned after falling into the river while ferrying tourists on Monday.
The missing man has been identified as Emil Surong, aged around 30–32.
Speaking to Kelvinel Khonglah the president of the Village Defence Party (VDP) Dawki, said that Surong was out on a routine boat ride with three female tourists when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed into the river.
“He was ferrying tourists as usual when he suddenly became sick and fell into the river. Since then, he hasn’t been seen,” Khonglah said.
Khonglah added that a search operation involving locals and police is currently underway at the spot where Surong fell.
However, Khonglah noted that the rescue efforts are being hampered by murky water conditions and near-zero visibility. Locals have resorted to using fish hooks in hopes of retrieving the body.
The search operation is ongoing.
