Border tension | Local farmers of Lapangap face fresh disruption from Karbi groups

Must read

Jowai, Sept 19: The Pnar farmers of Lapangap village in West Jaiñtia Hills once again faced disruption from people belonging to the Karbi community of Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district while harvesting their paddy fields on Friday.

According to reports, around 30 farmers from Lapangap went to their fields at around 10:00 am to begin harvesting. However, at approximately 12:00 noon, a group of Karbis from across the border arrived and began obstructing them by using catapults.

Village elders immediately alerted the Meghalaya Police team stationed in Lapangap, who rushed to the spot. On arrival, the police encountered an even larger group of aggressive Karbi miscreants, who continued pelting catapults at both the farmers and security personnel. The police were forced to shield themselves while trying to control the situation.

The Meghalaya Police then contacted their counterparts from Assam, who later intervened to disperse the Karbi group. Subsequently, the Meghalaya Police and the Dorbar Shnong of Lapangap requested the Assam Police to ensure that the farmers would be able to harvest their crops peacefully. However, Assam Police reportedly declined, citing the volatile nature of the situation.

Meanwhile, the Dorbar Shnong has appealed to the Meghalaya government to increase police manpower in Lapangap and to empower security forces to safeguard farmers during the crucial weeks of harvest.
