Guwahati, Sept 27: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by Hagrama Mohilary, has returned to power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, marking a dramatic revival of Mohilary’s political leadership after five years in the wilderness.
The BPF secured a majority of seats, positioning itself to form the next BTC government. By late Friday night (September 26, 2025), the party was leading in 21 of the autonomous council’s 40 seats, more than 12 hours after counting began at 8 a.m. Officials of the State Election Commission said the final results are expected by Saturday morning.

The elections, held on September 22, saw the BPF challenging the ruling coalition of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the regional Gana Suraksha Party.
The BTC governs the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which includes the districts of Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.
Once a militant leader, Mohilary transformed himself into a political force, ruling the BTC for 17 years until 2020. Initially a long-time ally of the Congress, the BPF shifted allegiance to the BJP ahead of the 2016 Assam Assembly elections.
In the 2020 BTC polls, the BPF emerged as the single-largest party with 17 seats but was ousted from power as the UPPL (12 seats), BJP (9 seats), and smaller parties stitched together a coalition to form the government.
