Imphal, Feb 1: Political activity intensified in Manipur on Sunday as all NDA MLAs, including BJP legislators and alliance partners, were flown to New Delhi for a crucial meeting, fuelling speculation over the future course of governance in the state.
According to party sources, the legislators have been summoned by Sambit Patra, BJP’s Northeast in-charge, for a meeting scheduled at 2 pm on Monday. The sudden movement comes amid prolonged Central rule in the state and just days before the suspension of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is set to end on February 13.
The development has assumed significance amid political uncertainty in the state, with no official clarity on whether a popular government will be formed or if central rule will continue.
Speaking to reporters before departing for Delhi, BJP MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen said government formation would be discussed at the meeting, but added that he would abide by the party’s decision.
“Government formation is the agenda. However, any leader chosen by the Centre is acceptable to me,” he said.
Another BJP legislator, L Nishikanta, cautioned against speculation, saying leadership decisions follow an internal party process and should not be influenced by social media narratives.
Striking an optimistic note, MLA Heikham Dingko said he was hopeful of a positive outcome from the Delhi deliberations.
In a further indication of heightened political activity, senior BJP leader A Sharda Devi and other party functionaries also left Imphal for New Delhi on Sunday, strengthening speculation that key organisational and leadership decisions relating to Manipur may be taken at the central level.
Meanwhile, divergent political signals continue to emerge from different parts of the state. While several Kuki organisations have publicly opposed the formation of a popular government, particularly in the valley areas, there has been a growing demand from the valley region for the restoration of an elected government.
Political observers say the contrasting positions underline deepening fault lines in Manipur’s polity, even as public pressure mounts for an end to prolonged political uncertainty.
Former Chief Minister N Biren Singh also left for New Delhi on Sunday and said all NDA partners from Manipur had been invited by the Centre for discussions.
“Today, all the NDA partners are invited by the Centre. Let us hope for a positive outcome,” he told reporters at Imphal International Airport.
He said the meeting was significant as it involved all NDA alliance partners, unlike an earlier meeting that included only BJP MLAs. Referring to the political timeline, Biren Singh noted that the Manipur Legislative Assembly’s suspension of business is due to end on February 12.
“With the suspended animation ending on February 12, expectations are high,” he said.
Responding to questions on his tenure, Biren Singh said governance is a continuous process and claimed that several infrastructure projects initiated during his term were nearing completion. He cited concrete road construction works, official quarters at Checkon in Imphal and the Deputy Commissioner complex among key initiatives.
“Whether I am in power or not, I tried my best to bring visible landscape-level changes in Manipur,” he said.
With NDA MLAs and senior leaders travelling to the national capital and the constitutional deadline approaching, the political situation in Manipur is widely seen as entering a critical phase, with the coming days expected to determine the state’s political trajectory.
