Dibrugarh, Dec 13: Campaigning for Arunachal Pradesh’s municipal and panchayat elections ended at 4 pm on Saturday, clearing the decks for polling on Monday, December 15. The final hours witnessed brisk political activity across the state, with Namsai’s Lekang Assembly Constituency NCP MLA Likha Soni leading an energetic campaign for his party’s candidates.
Expressing confidence ahead of polling day, Soni said the party had run a “strong and focused campaign,” engaging directly with voters and addressing local issues. “I expect a good performance from our NCP candidates across wards and constituencies,” he said.
Polling will be held from 7 am to 4 pm on Monday. Even before voting, results have emerged in several seats, with 63 candidates declared elected uncontested across municipal and rural local bodies. The ruling BJP has made major early gains, winning 58 Zilla Parishad seats unopposed and securing uncontested victories for 5,037 Gram Panchayat member candidates. The National People’s Party (NPP) has won one Zilla Parishad seat uncontested, while four BJP candidates have been elected unopposed to the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC).
Voters will nevertheless cast their ballots to decide the fate of 440 candidates contesting 186 Zilla Parishad seats, 39 candidates in 16 IMC wards, and 21 candidates in eight Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) wards. A total of 8,31,648 electors are eligible to vote across 2,171 polling stations.
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used for municipal elections, while ballot papers will be used for panchayat polls. The State Election Commission (SEC) said voting in the Dumba Singpho gram panchayat has been countermanded following the death of a validly nominated candidate. Counting of votes for all elections is scheduled for December 20.
