Cancer survivor, author, and motivational speaker: Dr Bhaskar Bora’s powerful comeback from paralysis and depression

Must read

Dibrugarh, July 3: Retired doctor Bhaskar Bora is an inspiration to anyone who has ever lost hope. Through sheer determination and an unbreakable spirit, Dr Bora transformed his life from despair to one of purpose, becoming a bestselling author and motivational speaker.

On July 17, 2019, what was supposed to be a routine surgery turned into a life-altering event when Dr Bora sustained a spinal cord injury that left him unable to walk. As if that were not enough, he was later diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which required multiple surgeries and ultimately led to his medical retirement.

Despite the devastating setbacks, Dr Bora refused to give up. His memoir, The Second Chance in Life, chronicles his personal journey through depression, grief, and physical disability to resilience and renewal. The book has resonated with readers worldwide, becoming a bestseller in 27 countries.

“It’s a memoir that shares my personal journey through significant life challenges,” said Dr Bora. “From paralysis to cancer, to battling depression—writing this book helped me find healing. I wanted to show that life caN begin again, no matter how bleak it looks.”

An Assamese version of the book, Jibanar Ditiyo Khuj, is also available for readers who prefer to read in their native language.

Bora encourages open conversations about depression, especially among men who often struggle to express vulnerability. “Never give up,” he said. “Focus on what you can control rather than mourning what you cannot. Feeling depressed is a common human experience—what matters is speaking out, not suffering in silence.”

Dr Bora, who qualified as a doctor in 1999, worked for years with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) and also ran successful ventures in hospitality, real estate, and medicine. His life took a dramatic turn in 2019 after the spinal cord injury and subsequent cancer diagnosis. Yet, instead of retreating, he chose to fight back——with purpose.

“I didn’t want to give up on life yet,” he said. “Since then, I’ve published my first book and become a motivational speaker, aiming to raise awareness about cancer, disability, and the power of resilience.”

A passionate advocate of patient-centered care, Dr Bora uses his dual perspective as a doctor and a patient to promote greater understanding around cancer and disability. He also founded Aspire Academy, a non-profit online educational institution in Assam, with the goal of making quality education accessible and affordable for students.

With his life story, Dr Bhaskar Bora not only offers hope but delivers a clear message: even when life knocks you down, it is possible to rise again—and thrive.
