Ri Bhoi, April 21: The vibrant and time-honoured Suwori festival, which has been celebrated for over a century, took place on Sunday with great enthusiasm and joy at a local agricultural field in Umsaw village. The spirited villagers of the Rabha community of Umsaw and Baregaon jointly organize this beloved festival.
According to the organizers, the Suwori festival is traditionally observed on the 9th day of the Assamese month of Bohag. The event is primarily arranged by the indigenous Rabha community, who hold it close to their hearts.
Many people, predominantly from the Rabha community of Meghalaya, actively participated in a wide array of traditional sports, including the mesmerizing Assamese Bihu and Bogejari Dance of the Rabhas. The festival served as a platform to showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Suren Rabha, the President, and Bhadreswar Rabha, the Secretary of the Suwori organizing committee, told reporters that the festival attracts not only Rabha locals but also individuals from diverse backgrounds, such as the Khasi, Garo, Boro, and other communities. This intermingling of cultures adds a delightful touch of unity and inclusivity to the festivities.
One of the highlights of the day was the copious preparation of Laru, a sweet delicacy, by the locals. These delectable treats were then joyously distributed as Prasad, symbolizing blessings and goodwill among the villagers.
The Suwori festival, with its time-honoured traditions and captivating festivities, continues to be a cherished occasion that brings communities together in celebration and fosters a sense of unity and pride in the vibrant tapestry of Meghalaya’s cultural heritage.
