Shillong, May 6: The Centre for Policy convened a workshop titled “Navigating AI Hallucinations & Conflict Misinformation” here on Wednesday to commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2026, drawing around 70 participants including researchers, government representatives, and college students from Shillong.

Organised as part of UNESCO’s global commemorations for WPFD 2026, the event was held with Boom Live as knowledge partner and supported by Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) Meghalaya, which provided the venue.

Opening the workshop, Centre for Policy Director Jade Lyngdoh underscored the need to support media practitioners amid mounting global challenges.

Citing UNESCO’s recent report World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development, he said “nearly 40% of media actors employ artificial intelligence to create or modify content.”

Lyngdoh warned of the risks associated with increasing reliance on AI-driven tools and stressed the imperative of building partnerships to safeguard information as a public good.

The workshop focused on the growing challenges of misinformation in crises, particularly with the rise of generative AI.

Divya Chandra of Boom Live delivered insights into the impact of AI-manipulated media, highlighting how artificially generated inaccuracies can affect journalism and reduce public trust.

She also shared her experience as a fact-checker and a toolkit for media stakeholders.

An interactive activity following the workshop engaged participants in identifying and responding to crisis scenarios, “encouraging critical thinking and practical application of news verification techniques taught during the workshop.”

The event concluded with an address by international lawyer Karuna Nundy, who serves on the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.

The Centre for Policy is a non-profit and independent think-and-do tank based in Meghalaya that works with international organisations, government, and civil society to advance impact for people, peace, and the planet.
