Guwahati, June 30: As torrential monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, triggering devastating floods and landslides, the Centre has stepped up support for the two states. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief ministers of both states and assured them of full assistance for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Shah held separate telephonic conversations with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the unfolding crisis caused by flash floods, landslides and incessant rainfall.

Following his discussion with the Home Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said he briefed Shah on the relief and rehabilitation measures underway in flood-hit Dhemaji district.

“He has assured us of all possible support and assistance from the Government of India to deal with this situation,” Sarma said, thanking the Union Home Minister for personally reviewing the flood situation.

Arunachal Pradesh continues to bear the brunt of the monsoon, with relentless rainfall triggering severe floods and landslides across nearly a dozen districts. Roads and bridges have been damaged, cutting off connectivity to several villages, while efforts are underway to clear debris and restore essential services. The Indian Air Force is also assisting rescue operations in some of the worst-affected areas.

The disaster has already claimed several lives, including 35-year-old machine operator Rupam Rabha from Assam’s Boko, who was killed after a landslide buried the excavator he was operating near Walong in Anjaw district.

The flood situation has also worsened in Assam, where the State Disaster Management Authority said nearly 16,000 people across 69 villages in Dhemaji district have been affected, with floodwaters inundating several revenue circles and disrupting normal life.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over several districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including East Siang, Leparada, Lower Siang, Lower Subansiri and Papum Pare. Authorities have urged residents to avoid landslide-prone stretches and remain vigilant, particularly those living near rivers and vulnerable hill slopes.

With more rain forecast over the coming days, the immediate focus remains on restoring road connectivity, clearing blocked routes and ensuring relief reaches marooned communities.
