Shillong, Sept 20: ‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ or ‘Voice of the People of Mawlai’ on Monday organized a sit-in demonstration opposite the Shillong Civil Hospital at Barik as part of series of protests in seeking justice for former HNLC leaders late Cheristerfield Thangkhiew. The sit-in demonstration organised by the KSU, FKJGP and HNYF of Mawlai Circle was later joined by the Sur Ehrngiew ki Nong Malki, Sur ki Nong Upper Shillong and the Sur ki Nong Ri Bhoi. The protestors are demanding the suspension of top police officials involved in the operation that led to the killing of Thangkhiew on August 13, 2021.

‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ splits

Meanwhile, the stir has seen a ‘split’ in member organizations of ‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’. On Monday as well, the rift was evident as eight other organisations that were part of the ‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ did not turn up for the sit-in demonstration. They alleged that the whole movement for justice for late Thangkhiew has been hijacked by KSU, FKJGP and HNYF.

The other organizations are, namely, Seng Samla Mawlai Pyllun, HYC Mawlai Circle, HANM, MPGF, MIPF, UHM, HUAM and TULBA.

The other eight organisations, who been sidelined by KSU, FKJGP and HNYF, in a public notice expressed disappointment after the movement has been taken over by the three organisations.

The eight other groups opposing Monday’s sit-in-demonstration near Civil Hospital junction also stated that the Meghalaya government has successfully administered their ‘Divide and Rule’ policy by splitting the Sur ki Nong Mawlai.
