Guwahati, Dec 31: The Cyber Police Station of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam, has swung into action following an FIR filed by Dr. Sadagar Deuri, a senior surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), who was targeted by a sophisticated ‘digital arrest’ cyber scam.
Dr. Deuri, widely respected for his service to underprivileged patients, was allegedly duped by cybercriminals posing as law enforcement officials. Using fear and deception, the fraudsters coerced him into making multiple fund transfers, cheating him of approximately ₹49 lakh.
In a significant early breakthrough, the CID has managed to place a hold on over ₹8 lakh of the defrauded amount.
Coordinated efforts with banks and financial institutions are currently underway to freeze additional accounts and facilitate the recovery and reversal of funds to the victim’s account.
A case has been formally registered at the Cyber Police Station, CID Assam, and a detailed investigation is in progress.
The CID is deploying all available resources — including advanced technical analysis and inter-agency coordination — to trace the money trail, identify those involved, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, the Cyber Cell, CID Assam, has issued a strong public advisory, urging citizens to remain alert against such cyber frauds.
Authorities reiterated that no legitimate law enforcement agency conducts arrests over phone or video calls, nor seeks money transfers for “verification” or “clearance”.
Citizens receiving suspicious calls or messages claiming legal action are advised to immediately contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or report the matter online at cybercrime.gov.in.
Assam Police reaffirmed its commitment to combating cybercrime and safeguarding the public against rapidly evolving digital threats.
