Tura, Mar 7: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inaugurated the Nehru Ading Locality Beautification Project at Hawakhana in Tura, while announcing that development projects worth more than ₹700 crore are currently underway to transform the town’s infrastructure and urban facilities.

The project at Nehru Ading was undertaken by the Nehru Ading Development and Welfare Committee (NADWC) to improve the surroundings and basic infrastructure of the locality. The chief minister unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the inauguration during a programme held at the Old Church Compound in the area.

Addressing residents and community leaders, Sangma said Tura is witnessing a gradual transformation through multiple development initiatives, though more work remains to be done.

“Different interventions at different levels worth more than ₹700 crore are being implemented for the development of Tura town,” he said.

Highlighting projects under the Smart Cities Mission, the chief minister said about ₹60 crore has been allocated for paving internal roads in various localities. In addition, ₹15 crore has already been spent in the first phase for street lighting and beautification works, while another ₹15 crore has been sanctioned for the beautification of Tura Bazar.

He also spoke about the ongoing city beautification drive aimed at improving urban infrastructure and public safety. As part of the initiative, around 350 CCTV cameras and 500 street lights are being installed across Tura.

For the Nehru Ading locality specifically, four CCTV cameras and six street lights have been provided to improve security and lighting.

Sangma said infrastructure such as airports, hotels, roads, surveillance systems and lighting are essential for building the ecosystem required to take the town’s development to the next level.

The chief minister also urged residents to play an active role in maintaining civic discipline and cleanliness, stressing that community participation is key to sustaining development initiatives.

During the interaction, residents raised several issues including the need for a community hall, additional beautification support and construction of a boundary wall for Hawakhana Government L.P. School. Renovation of the school building and water connectivity for a local SSA school were also highlighted.

Community members also flagged concerns about the growing drug menace at Jerusalem Junction, which they said has become a distribution point for drug suppliers and users.

Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by Cameron N. Sangma, president of the Nehru Ading Development and Welfare Committee. An invocation prayer was delivered by Evie Pamade R. Marak, assistant pastor of HBC Tura.

A briefing on the beautification project was presented by Melvilline R. Momin, secretary of the committee, outlining the work undertaken under the initiative. Representatives of the committee also submitted a memorandum to the chief minister highlighting key development priorities for the locality.
