Guwahati, July 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday appealed to people across the state to join a large-scale public relief initiative for families affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam, announcing a ₹12-crore campaign that will supplement the government’s ongoing relief efforts.
Speaking after attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme at Azara, Sarma said the government was already carrying out rescue, relief and rehabilitation work, but stressed that society must also come together to help families rebuild their lives.
“We have planned a relief programme worth around ₹12 crore. Under it, mekhela sadors will be distributed to women, while T-shirts, sportswear and other essentials will be provided to those affected,” he said.
The Chief Minister appealed to individuals willing to contribute to contact the BJP’s state office or reach out through his official Facebook and X accounts, adding that his bank account details would be shared to facilitate donations.
Sarma said he had discussed the initiative with leaders across party lines and appealed to party workers, supporters and well-wishers to contribute generously once the government’s relief arrangements are completed.
The announcement comes as the flood toll in Assam has risen to 66, while more than 6.54 lakh people remain affected across the state, although water levels have begun receding in several districts.
