Guwahati, Sept 10: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to urgently repair damaged roads, fix footpaths, and close open manholes across Guwahati ahead of Durga Puja.
Sarma instructed that the work be treated as a “top priority,” stressing that manholes must be properly covered after drain cleaning under a standard operating procedure (SoP) to avoid accidents during the festive rush.

The chief minister also set a deadline for the under-construction Noonmati–Dighalipukhuri flyover, asking officials to ensure it is opened to the public before the celebrations.
The review meeting was attended by Principal Secretary KK Dwivedi, GMC Commissioner MS Lakshmipriya, PWD Commissioner Paban Terang, Special Secretary Bibhuti Saikia, Chief Engineer (Roads) Sanjib Shyam, and other senior officials.
With most city roads in poor condition, residents have been facing serious inconveniences, raising concerns over public safety during the Durga Puja festivities.
