Shillong, July 31: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (COMSO) Jaintia Region on Thursday submitted a petition to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District, Shivansh Avasthi demanding a checking drive against foreigners illegally entering the region.
Vice Chairman of COMSO Sambormi Lyngdoh said that the demand is driven by the recent eviction drive in Assam, which has prohibited non-Indians from residing within its borders. The organization fears that those expelled may seek refuge in East Jaintia Hills, and is urging the DC’s office to take action to prevent this.
He informed that the Deputy Commissioner expressed his willingness to collaborate with COMSO to prevent the illegal entry of foreigners. He plans to convene a meeting with the Waheh Chnongs of East Jaintia Hills and government officials to explore strategies for preventing illegal entry and organizing raids in villages where foreigners may be hiding.
Although the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed states, the DC of East Jaintia Hills stated that no directives have been received from the State Government regarding the formation of Special Task Forces (STFs) in the district, Lyngdoh stated.
