Guwahati, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress, claiming the party is facing continuous electoral setbacks across the country and could soon record a “century of defeats.”
Addressing a public gathering in Silchar after launching key infrastructure projects, Modi said the Congress was being “taught a lesson by every state” in the country.
“Today, every state in the country is teaching Congress a lesson. The party is losing election after election and may soon hit a century of defeats,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, where he performed the Bhoomi Pujan for what he described as the first access-controlled greenfield four-lane high-speed corridor in Northeast India.
Taking a swipe at the Congress over the scale of the project, Modi said, “Just ask Congress leaders about a project worth ₹24,000 crore. Give them a pen and paper and ask them to write the figure — they won’t even be able to do it.”
The Prime Minister accused successive Congress governments of neglecting the development of the Northeast for decades after independence.
He said the region had long been kept “distant from Delhi in both attention and emotion,” leaving states in the Northeast deprived of infrastructure and economic opportunities.
Referring to historical developments after independence, Modi alleged that border decisions taken during the Congress era weakened the Barak Valley’s traditional role as a major trade route.
“The Barak Valley was once known as an important trade corridor and industrial hub. But the way borders were drawn cut off its crucial access to sea routes, weakening its economic strength,” he said.
He further claimed that despite being in power for decades, Congress governments did little to develop the region.
Highlighting the government’s development initiatives, Modi said the BJP-led government at the Centre and in Assam is working to revive the Barak Valley as a major centre for trade and commerce.
He pointed to welfare measures for farmers, stating that ₹20,000 crore has been transferred directly to farmers in Assam over the past decade through central schemes.
“Think about it — in just ten years, ₹20,000 crore has gone directly into the pockets of farmers here. During the ten years when Congress ruled, even though the Prime Minister was from Assam, farmers here did not receive such support,” he said.
The Prime Minister also criticised the Congress over a recent protest during an international AI summit, where party leaders staged a shirtless demonstration.
Modi accused the opposition party of attempting to tarnish India’s image due to frustration over repeated electoral losses.
“Driven by the desperation of defeat, the Congress has started targeting the nation itself. In a bid to discredit the AI summit, Congress leaders even tore their own clothes in protest. It seems they have nothing left to do except tear their own clothes in desperation,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the country had taken note of the incident and condemned such actions.
