Shillong, Oct 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) national president, Conrad K. Sangma has termed the Congress party as a party this is disintegrating throughout the country, and it is only wise for its leaders to jump to other parties as “there is no use in being in a sinking ship”. He also mocked the grand old party for being unable to elect a party president even after three years, which reflects lack of leadership and its inability to grow.
Speaking at the ceremony to welcome KHADC MDC from Mawphlang-Diengiei Lamphrang Blah to NPP here on Tuesday, Sangma said Blah has realised that the Congress party is disintegrating throughout the country. “He has realized that today the Congress party even at the national level only has a temporary president. Even after three years they were not able to elect a leader. If the leadership is not there, who will make the party grow. And that is why today the Congress is dissipating. There is no use in being in a sinking ship.”
He also added, “I can assure you that together we will work, we will win this election, we will move forward this constituency.”
NPP’s growth and status of national party
The NPP chief also spoke at length about the growth of NPP from humble beginnings and its focus on tribal interests. “There was a time where the National People’s Party had only two MLAs in the whole country. And slowly and steadily, within a matter of 8 years, the party today has MLAs in Arunachal Pradesh, Ministers in Manipur, has MLAs in Nagaland and of course we are heading the government here in Meghalaya,” he informed.
He said all this has been possible because people believe in the constitution, vision and goals of NPP. “The National People’s Party has always maintained that we will fight for the right of our people. We will always keep the interests of our people from the North East in front. We will always keep the interests of tribal community in front. And people after seeing these beliefs and the constitution of our party have supported us throughout the North East,” he said.
He further stated that the National People’s Party has achieved the status of a national party in record time, which no other party has been able to accomplish so far.
“In the record time the National People’s Party has achieved something that no other political party in the whole country could achieve in such a short time, which was to become a national party,” he stressed while adding “but the beauty of National People’s Party is this that we may be a party that is a national party but our mindset is on the regional importance and on the regional issues of our state.”
