CM cites Shillong Tech Park as one of Northeast India’s biggest digital success stories
SHILLONG, June 22: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has outlined an ambitious vision for the state’s digital future, arguing that the next phase of economic growth will be driven not by geography or natural resources alone, but by the ability to build world-class digital infrastructure and position the Northeast as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia.
In the foreword to a new knowledge paper, Digital Infrastructure of Northeast India: Building the Digital Gateway of India’s Act East Future, released during the recently concluded Shillong Summit, Sangma said regions that thrive in the 21st century will be those that invest across the entire digital ecosystem—from broadband networks and data centres to cybersecurity, cloud platforms and innovation hubs.
“The Northeast needs data centres and cloud infrastructure to host its growing digital economy,” Sangma wrote, stressing that cybersecurity, digital governance platforms and technology-enabled services must become foundational pillars of development

The report makes a bold case for the region’s digital transformation, stating that the Northeast is witnessing a rare convergence of factors needed for rapid growth.
“For the first time in independent India’s history, the conditions for transformative digital growth in the Northeast exist simultaneously: political will, infrastructure investment and a geographic advantage that no other part of the country can replicate. Eight states, one strategic opportunity,” the report states.
Sangma highlighted Shillong’s emergence as a technology hub, pointing to the city’s Tech Park as one of the Northeast’s biggest digital success stories. The facility has helped attract startups, investors and skilled professionals, demonstrating the region’s potential to build a knowledge-based economy.
The report places Meghalaya at the centre of a broader digital transformation unfolding across the Northeast. While acknowledging persistent connectivity gaps in remote and rural areas, it argues that the region possesses significant advantages, including a young population, rising digital adoption and a strategic location linking India with Southeast Asia.
According to the Chief Minister, digital connectivity is already reshaping lives across the region, enabling students to access online education, farmers to obtain market information and entrepreneurs to reach customers far beyond state borders. The challenge now is to ensure that these opportunities become universally accessible.
Among the key recommendations are investments in infrastructure capable of supporting emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, geospatial technologies and cybersecurity. The report also proposes the creation of digital nomad villages, stronger fibre-optic networks and innovation hubs to foster entrepreneurship and technology-driven industries.
A major theme of the paper is the Northeast’s growing strategic importance under India’s Act East Policy

“Northeast India serves as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia,” the report notes, highlighting the region’s borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and Nepal. It argues that geopolitical relevance will increasingly be determined not only by trade routes and security considerations but also by digital connectivity.
As India deepens economic engagement with ASEAN nations, the report says high-capacity telecommunications networks, cross-border fibre links, digital payment systems and cloud platforms will underpin the next phase of regional integration and cross-border commerce.
The paper envisions the Northeast emerging as a hub for digital services, fibre routing, cloud infrastructure and technology partnerships, with sectors such as software development, geospatial services and business process management particularly well-positioned to benefit from the region’s location and talent pool.
“The infrastructure we create today will determine the choices available to the next generation,” Sangma wrote, expressing confidence that the Northeast can evolve into one of Asia’s most digitally dynamic regions.
