Dibrugarh, Nov 6: Dibrugarh University marked a significant literary milestone on Wednesday with the launch of the first-ever Korean book translated into Assamese. The book, Atmaanuhondhanot Dhyanor (Meditation in Self-Discovery), authored by Venerable Buddha Bhikhu Jeong Yeo and translated by Debojani Das, Teaching Associate in the Department of Korean Language, was officially released at a special ceremony on campus.
The event was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Registrar Dr. Paramananda Sonowal, and Professor Surajit Borkotokey, along with a 14-member South Korean delegation comprising monks, priests, and media representatives.

Prof. Hazarika described the translation as a “groundbreaking achievement” for Assamese literature.
“This marks a momentous occasion not just for Dibrugarh University, but for Assamese literature as a whole. Translating Korean philosophical works into Assamese opens new avenues for cultural and intellectual dialogue between our two civilizations,” he said.
During the programme, Venerable Jeong Yeo personally distributed copies of his book to students and faculty members, emphasizing the importance of meditation and self-awareness in modern life. His work explores the transformative power of mindfulness in achieving inner peace and harmony.

In a gesture reflecting his deep commitment to cultural exchange, Venerable Jeong Yeo announced a scholarship of USD 1,000 (approximately ₹84,000) for students pursuing Korean language studies at Dibrugarh University.
“Language is the bridge that connects cultures and hearts. I hope this modest contribution will inspire more students to explore Korean language and culture,” he said.
Translator Debojani Das expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to introduce Korean philosophy to Assamese readers.

“Translating spiritual and meditative texts demands both linguistic precision and cultural sensitivity. It has been an honour to render Venerable Jeong Yeo’s profound insights in Assamese,” she said.
Members of the Korean delegation lauded the university’s efforts to promote Korean studies and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two regions. The ceremony concluded with cultural exchanges, symbolizing the growing friendship between Korea and Assam’s academic and literary communities.
