Shillong, May 30: The 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 concluded on May 29 at Umiam Lake, Meghalaya, spotlighting emerging sailing talents from across India. Among the standout performers was local sailor Doaydy T Sangma of the Umiam Sailing Club, who was honoured with the ‘Most Promising Sailor’ award. Sangma’s achievement underscores the rising prominence of Meghalaya in the national sailing arena.
Organised by the Umiam Sailing Club and UDAY Sailing Foundation under the aegis of the Yachting Association of India (YAI), the five-day regatta featured 79 sailors from nine premier sailing clubs nationwide. Competitions spanned five categories and 11 boat classes, including Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, 420, and 29er. Notably, the event served as a Junior National Ranking Event, influencing selections for the 2026 Asian Games.
The regatta emphasised inclusivity, with 25 women sailors and nine novices participating, reflecting the sport’s growing diversity. International judges, race officers, and a national measurer ensured adherence to global standards.
In addition to Sangma’s accolade, the National Sailing School (NSS) from Bhopal was recognised as the ‘Best Sailing Club,’ and NSS sailor Shashank Batham received the prestigious Col Jaggi Trophy.
Dignitaries present included Paul Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister of Meghalaya, and Lt Gen TSA Narayanan (Retd), Vice President of YAI. Lt Gen Narayanan praised the organisers for creating a professional yet sailor-friendly environment, setting a new benchmark for regional regattas in India.
Dr. Vijay Kumar D., Commissioner & Secretary of the Department of Tourism and Chairman of the Umiam Sailing Club, highlighted the government’s vision to develop Umiam Lake as a permanent hub for water sports, including sailing and rowing, especially with Meghalaya set to host the National Games in 2027.
The successful execution of the 3rd YAI North East Regatta 2025 not only celebrated sporting excellence but also reinforced Meghalaya’s commitment to fostering a vibrant water sports culture.
