Shillong, May 17: The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlong Nongtluh has urged the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of the Government of Meghalaya to sanction a new building for the Integrated Cattle Development Project (ICDP) Centre at Mawlong Nongtluh.
In a press note issued on May 16, Rangbah Shnong Bah Arbingstone Shylla said the centre, which was set up in 1970, had earlier served around 20 villages in the Mawlong area but has remained non-functional for several years.
He said there are currently no staff at the centre, including a doctor, Field Veterinary Assistant (VFA), Bull Attendant (BA) or chowkidar. The building has also become dilapidated, with its roof collapsed and walls damaged.
According to the shnong, farmers from the area are now forced to travel to Nongpoh for basic veterinary treatment and vaccination services. It added that villagers have reported losses of livestock and income due to the lack of proper services.
The Dorbar Shnong has demanded immediate sanction of funds for reconstruction of the ICDP Centre, restoration of regular treatment and vaccination services with full staffing, and upgradation of the centre into a veterinary dispensary to meet the needs of the growing population in the area.
The shnong also appealed to the government to address the matter for the welfare of farmers and the development of the area.
