Shillong, July 26: Local favourites Shillong Lajong FC will take on Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM FA) in the opening match of Group E of the 134th IndianOil Durand Cup on Saturday.
The clash will kick off at 4:00 PM at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, following the official opening ceremony to be graced by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
Lajong, who impressed in the 2024 edition by stunning East Bengal in the quarterfinals before bowing out to eventual champions NorthEast United FC in the semis, will look to start strong in front of a home crowd.
The team boasts a dynamic mix of promising local talent and seasoned international players. The frontline will be spearheaded by Douglas Tardin, with key contributions expected from hometown stars Figo Syndai, Phrangki Buam and Kenstar Kharshong.
“We are very excited to play our first match of the Durand Cup at home. The team is well-prepared and eager to give it our all,” said Lajong head coach Birendra Thapa, adding that the camp is in high spirits and the players are ready to deliver.
The Malaysian Armed Forces, making their Durand Cup debut, are expected to bring their hallmark discipline and intensity to the field. Representing the nation’s military, ATM FA will look to make a strong impression in their opening game.

Group E promises to be a tight contest, with NorthEast United FC and Rangdajied United FC also in the mix. With every point crucial, Lajong will aim to gain an early advantage, while ATM FA hope to mark their maiden Durand appearance with a statement performance.
