Shillong, June 30: The Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Tourism Promotion Society (DTPS), East Khasi Hills District, has informed the general public that in view of the safety reasons, it is mandatory for tourists to take tourist guide services while trekking to avoid any unfortunate events.
The order follows two tragic deaths in Sohra in recent months – first was of a Hungarian tourist and the second was the high-profile murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi.
Hungarian tourist Puskás Zsolt’s body was recovered on April 10 along an old trail leading to Tyrna village that is no longer used. He was trekking alone when he went missing.
Similarly, Raja and Sonam also took a guide only till Nongriat , saying they didn’t need guide anymore for return trip as they ‘knew’ the route. Although Raja was eventually murdered, but having a guide along could have saved his life.
Following his death, which was initially thought to be a missing case, several quarters had demanded to make tourist guide services mandatory for tourists coming to state for trekking purposes.
