Shillong, 14 Oct: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has delisted three political parties from Meghalaya for remaining inactive and failing to contest any election for six consecutive years.
The delisted parties are the Meghalaya Democratic Party, the North East Social Democratic Party, and the Regional Democratic Secular Congress.
According to the ECI, the action is part of a nationwide exercise in which 474 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) have been removed from the official register.

The Commission cited violations of Para 3 (xxiii) of the Guidelines for Registration of Political Parties issued under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, which requires every registered party to contest at least one election within five years of registration.
Despite several notices and hearings conducted through the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the respective states, the Commission said the parties failed to produce proof of electoral participation since 2019.

With their delisting, these parties lose privileges such as income tax exemptions, eligibility to accept contributions, and access to common election symbols.
The ECI stated that the affected parties can appeal against the order within 30 days.
The decision is part of an ongoing verification drive to enhance transparency and accountability among registered political parties across the country.
