Guwahati, Feb 17: A full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, arrived in Assam on February 16 for a three-day visit to assess the state’s preparedness for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The delegation includes Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The team was received in Guwahati by Assam Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel.
According to officials, the Commission will hold detailed consultations with representatives of political parties, senior election officials, and state authorities during its visit. District Election Officers and Superintendents of Police are scheduled to brief the panel on ground-level arrangements, including voter facilitation, deployment plans, and security measures.
The Commission is also expected to meet the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of Police, and other senior officials to review administrative coordination, law and order preparedness, and logistical arrangements.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with the two Election Commissioners, will address the media on February 18, the final day of the visit.
The 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly is likely to go to polls in March–April, with the term of the current House set to end on May 20.
