Tura, July 13: A fake message circulating on social media has sparked panic and severely impacted business at several fast food joints near the petrol pump at Hawakhana Junction in Tura.
The message falsely claimed that “some people selling chicken pakora near the petrol pump have HIV” and urged people to avoid the area. This baseless rumour spread rapidly, leading to a sharp decline in footfall at the popular food hub, particularly during weekends.
Speaking to Hub News, Anukul Rishi, a fast food stall owner, said, “This has affected our business very badly. We are now not even making Rs 500 a day. No one among us has AIDS. We appeal to the public not to believe in this false propaganda.”
Once bustling with customers—especially in the evenings and on weekends—the area now appears deserted.
The affected stall owners, numbering around 7 to 8, have taken the matter seriously and lodged an FIR at the Tura Police Station. Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the rumour.
Local residents and customers are urged to verify facts before sharing such sensitive messages, as misinformation can harm livelihoods and create unnecessary panic.
