FGN says Naga political solution must uphold historical rights

Must read

Kohima, July 2: The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) has asserted that any settlement to the protracted Naga political issue must be rooted in the historical and political rights of the Naga people and should not be pursued merely for the sake of an early agreement.

The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) is the underground government established by the Naga National Council (NNC), the oldest Naga nationalist organisation.

In a statement titled “Seeking Solution that does not Compromise Truth,” issued by Rali Wali of the NNC/FGN under the leadership of Kedahge Zhopra Vero on Thursday, the organisation said it understood the growing impatience among Nagas over the unresolved issue but cautioned against an “expedient solution” that lacks historical and political foundations.

Referring to the recent “Fed-up Nagas” youth rally, the FGN said the demonstration reflected widespread public frustration and deserved serious attention. However, it maintained that a hurried settlement without addressing the core historical and political questions would neither be meaningful nor enduring.
Reiterating its long-held position, the FGN said the Naga political movement, spearheaded by the Naga National Council (NNC), is founded on the inherent sovereignty of the Naga people and their right to determine their own future.

It cited historical milestones such as the 1947 Naga Declaration of Independence, the 1951 Plebiscite and the 1952 boycott of the Indian general elections as central to the Naga political narrative.

The organisation further stated that political developments, including the Shillong Accord, the Framework Agreement, the Agreed Position and the 16-Point Agreement, as well as various ceasefire arrangements, should be evaluated in the context of these historical realities.

The FGN also paid tribute to the pioneers of the Naga movement, saying earlier leaders had rejected political compromise and personal gain in favour of protecting the future of the Naga nation. It urged the present generation to uphold that legacy and guard against any attempt to dilute the political rights secured through past sacrifices.

While reiterating its desire for an early resolution, the FGN maintained that any final settlement must be honourable, historically grounded and acceptable to the Naga people, insisting that the historical truth of the Naga struggle should form the basis of any future agreement and not become a matter of compromise.
