Tura, May 23: In a significant advancement for healthcare in Garo Hills, the first-ever gynecological laparoscopy surgery was successfully performed at the District Maternity and Child Hospital (MCH) in Tura on Thursday afternoon.
The groundbreaking procedure was led by Dr. Dylan G. Momin, an Obstetrician & Gynecologist with FMAS and DMAS qualifications, alongside his dedicated team and Dr. Blandina Marak, the attending Anaesthetist.
The pioneering surgery, which involved the removal of a large left dermoid ovarian cyst from a 37-year-old patient, was completed in approximately two and a half hours. The patient had been admitted to the hospital four to five days prior to the surgery. This extended admission period was a precautionary measure, given that it was the first such case performed at the facility, and also due to existing bed constraints at the hospital.

Despite these factors, the patient is reported to be recovering well and is expected to be discharged soon, potentially as early as tomorrow, highlighting the benefits of this minimally invasive technique.
Gynaecological laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used in gynecology to diagnose and treat various conditions, often involving the use of a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) inserted into the abdominal cavity.
It is a “keyhole” surgery approach that offers numerous advantages over traditional open surgery, including significantly less post-operative pain, smaller scars, and a shorter hospital stay. These benefits contribute to a quicker recovery for patients, allowing them to return to their normal activities sooner.
“Being a young team in experience, we did good,” remarked Dr. Momin, acknowledging the collaborative effort and dedication that went into achieving this medical first for MCH Tura.
The successful completion of this complex procedure means better gynecological care for the region, providing patients with access to advanced surgical options closer to home.
