First Vande Bharat Sleeper train to run on Guwahati–Kolkata route

Guwahati, Jan 1: The country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will operate on the Guwahati–Kolkata route, a major boost for long-distance rail travel between Assam and West Bengal.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday announced that the Vande Bharat Sleeper train has successfully completed all testing and certification processes, with the Guwahati–Kolkata corridor proposed as its inaugural route. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to flag off the train in the coming days.

Calling it a significant milestone for Indian Railways, Vaishnaw said the Vande Bharat Sleeper train would offer world-class facilities, enhanced safety, and a modern travel experience tailored for long-distance overnight journeys.

The inaugural run is likely to take place within the next 15–20 days, around January 17–18. According to preliminary details, the fare from Guwahati to Howrah (Kolkata) is expected to be around ₹2,300 for 3AC (including food), approximately ₹3,000 for 2AC, and about ₹3,600 for First AC.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Guwahati–Kolkata route, noting that it will greatly benefit passengers from both states.

He also expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for his continued support in strengthening Assam’s railway infrastructure.
