Boko, June 4: In a major crackdown on illegal fishing during the annual breeding season, the Assam Fishery Department on Thursday seized 105 fish traps and several illegal nets from the Brahmaputra River in Kamrup district, officials said.
The operation was conducted from Acholpara Zero Point under the Goroimari Development Block following complaints that fishermen were continuing to catch brood fish and juvenile fish despite a seasonal fishing ban.
The raid was carried out under the direction of Kamrup District Fishery Development Officer Dr Sanjay Sharma, with support from Goroimari Police and fisheries personnel.
Officials said fishing gear had been laid across stretches of the river in violation of the closed season imposed under the Assam Fishery Act from April 1 to July 15, a critical period for fish breeding and spawning.
During the operation, authorities recovered several live fish trapped in the seized nets and released them back into the Brahmaputra, aiming to protect fish stocks and support natural regeneration of aquatic resources.
The enforcement team used mechanised boats to access riverine areas where illegal fishing activities were reportedly taking place.
Assistant Fishery Officer Rajen Das, Fishery Demonstrator Himanshu Baruah, Fishery Mitras Pradip Kumar Nath and Abdus Sattar, along with local residents, participated in the drive.
Fisheries officials said indiscriminate harvesting of brood fish and spawn during the breeding season poses a serious threat to fish populations and the river’s ecological balance. The department warned that enforcement operations would continue across the Brahmaputra and its tributaries to curb illegal fishing and protect aquatic biodiversity.
