Must read

Resubelpara, June 4: A Meghalaya legislator has pledged to adopt tuberculosis (TB) patients as part of efforts to strengthen treatment support and accelerate the state’s drive towards eliminating the disease by 2030.

The announcement was made by Mendipathar MLA and Chairman of the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation, Marthon J. Sangma, during a Jan Bhagidari programme held under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’s 100-Day Campaign in North Garo Hills on Thursday.

Addressing community members, health workers and students at Mendipathar, Sangma said TB remains a curable disease and urged people to make use of diagnostic facilities available at the grassroots level. He said the district was working collectively with stakeholders to achieve the national goal of TB elimination by 2030.

The programme, organised by the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), highlighted growing community participation in the fight against TB, one of India’s most persistent public health challenges.

District Tuberculosis Officer Dr Chrissie Pearly M. Sangma said early diagnosis remains critical in controlling the disease. She urged people experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, chest pain, unexplained weight loss and fatigue to undergo testing at nearby health facilities.

She noted that diagnostic services, including portable testing technologies, are now available across health centres in North Garo Hills, helping improve access to timely detection and treatment.

District Medical and Health Officer Dr Priya Sengse R. Sangma said the district has been conducting extensive screening, awareness and outreach activities under the 100-Day TB Mukt Bharat Campaign, which was launched on March 24. She encouraged residents to cooperate with health workers during screening drives and stressed that TB is fully curable with proper treatment.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Rezia Sangma called on students to become ambassadors for TB awareness and help spread information about government-supported diagnosis and treatment services.

A free health check-up camp was also organised alongside the programme.

The Jan Bhagidari initiative is part of the Centre’s broader strategy to mobilise communities, elected representatives and local institutions in support of India’s goal of becoming TB-free by 2030.
