Kohima, May 30: In a significant show of discontent, five prominent Naga tribes—Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi—on Thursday staged coordinated protest rallies across multiple districts of Nagaland, calling for an urgent review of the state’s job reservation policy.
The demonstrations were organized under the banner of the ‘5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy’ (CORRP), which was formed in 2023 to advocate for equitable job reservations for these tribes.
CORRP representatives said the protests follow months of unacknowledged appeals to the state government. “We submitted a memorandum on September 20 last year and issued an ultimatum on April 26. But the government has remained unresponsive,” a committee member said. “Left with no alternative, we have launched this democratic agitation to highlight our demands.”
The committee warned that the protests would intensify if the state government fails to initiate a review of the existing policy.
Nagaland’s current job reservation framework, introduced in 1977, grants 25% reservation in non-technical and non-gazetted posts for select Backward Tribes (BT), initially designed for a ten-year period. However, the policy has continued without revision, prompting fresh demands from other communities who feel excluded from its benefits.
CORRP maintains that a re-evaluation of the decades-old policy is essential to ensure equitable representation across all Naga tribes in state employment.
