Agartala, July 10: Over 100 families were rendered homeless after sudden flash floods struck the South Tripura district on Wednesday.

Continuous downpour submerged low-lying areas across the district. All schools and anganwadi centres remained closed due to the heavy rainfall.

The water level in the Muhuri River rose above the danger mark of 15.70 metres, flooding both sides of the embankment.
The district administration has urged residents in low-lying areas to remain alert in the wake of the flash floods triggered by incessant rain since Tuesday.

As many as 289 people from 118 families have taken shelter in 10 relief camps.

“Due to incessant rainfall since Monday night, many low-lying areas in Belonia and Santirbazar subdivisions were inundated by floodwaters. We have taken all precautionary measures,” said an official.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha enquired about the latest flood situation in the district and instructed officials to take all possible steps to assist those affected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ (be prepared) for the South Tripura district.
