Guwahati, Dec 1: Fresh unrest broke out on Sunday at Pilingkata along the Assam–Meghalaya border, after a confrontation between residents of the two states escalated into a violent clash, leaving several people injured.
The incident reportedly began after a nameplate was removed in a disputed stretch of the border area. Tensions flared when a group of women from the Meghalaya side allegedly attacked women from the Assam side, triggering a larger confrontation between the two communities.
As word spread, more residents from both sides gathered at the spot, leading to a heated face-off. Several individuals sustained injuries, though the exact number is yet to be confirmed. No arrests have been made so far.

The clash has once again highlighted the fragile situation along the interstate border, where disputes remain despite a March 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between Assam and Meghalaya aimed at resolving differences in several contested locations, including Pilingkata. While some villages were formally transferred to Meghalaya under the agreement, discontent continues in multiple pockets where local claims and administrative boundaries remain contested.
Additional security personnel have now been deployed to prevent further escalation, and authorities from both states are monitoring the situation closely.
