Shillong, July 12: Leaders must be equipped not just with business acumen, but with conscience, adaptability, and a service-first mindset.

This was the core message delivered by Major General Rajesh Kumar Jha, AVSM & Bar (Retd.), during the Veteran Leadership Series at IIM Shillong on July 10.
Themed “Leadership Lessons: From Battlefield to Boardroom,” the session drew a packed audience eager to learn from one of the Indian Army’s most seasoned officers. General Jha, now Director (Personnel) at NEEPCO, brought decades of frontline experience—from Kargil to Doklam—into sharp focus for aspiring business leaders.
“In the Army, we don’t lead from behind; we lead from the front,” he urged students to cultivate courage, clarity, and ethical conviction in their leadership journey.
Citing examples from Operation SINDOOR, he illustrated how strategic clarity, technological readiness, and values-based execution in high-stakes military operations can guide effective corporate decision-making.
He also highlighted his work at NEEPCO, including HR reforms, gender inclusivity, sports revival, and green energy collaborations with the Indian Army under NTPC Group initiatives.
“Leadership today is not just about targets, but about trust, sustainability, and service,” he noted.
Professor Nalini Prava Tripathy, Director-in-Charge, opened the session by emphasising the importance of learning from diverse leadership models. “The resilience and moral courage of military leaders offer critical lessons for today’s complex business environment,” she said.
The event was attended by several NEEPCO officials and dignitaries, including Ramesh Kumar Jha (Retd. IRSE), Elbin D. Doley (GM–HR), Ajay Kumar (DGM–IR), and Anupam Buragohain (Manager–HR).
A lively Q&A session followed, with discussions on transformational leadership, crisis management, and the role of business in nation-building.
