Garo Hills jubiliation as Tura Govt College gets NAAC Accreditation

Tura, June 29: celebrations are all around Tura, particularly among the student community and teachers fraternity following the announcement of NAAC Accreditation to Garo Hills’ oldest college- Tura Government College.

The college has witnessed several generations of students from different corners of Garo Hills successfully passing through its doors for well over half a century.

At one time, it was the only higher education institute throughout Garo Hills that provided crucial education, not just in the Humanities (Arts) stream, but also in Science and Commerce.

It has only been in the last 30 odd years that Tura has seen the opening of two private colleges to cater to the student population.

Tura Government College has been accredited by NAAC and the results announced on June 28 bringing cheers to its students and the alumni.

The college was assessed and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore on 28th June 2022 in its 112nd Standing Committee meeting of NAAC.

The College has obtained a grade of B+ with CGPA score of 2.53 in its 1st cycle.

“It is indeed a proud moment and historic occasion for Tura Government College in its 64 years of existence,” an ecstatic Principal of TGC Terence D Marak told Hub News.

He recalled that the Self Study Report (SSR) was submitted to NAAC on 17th February 2022 and culminated with the visit of Peer Team to the College on 21st& 22nd June 2022.

The college has a chequered history with many of Garo Hills renowned citizens having studied there or even worked in this premier institution.

Well known educationists such as Mr I K Sangma and Late Prof. Lindrid D Shira were part of this prestigious institution, among others.

A three member team comprising of Prof. Dharmarajan P K, Former Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala as Chairperson, Prof. Pravin Kar, Professor, Department of Chemistry, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, Orissa as Member Coordinator and Dr. Radhika Nayak, Principal, DCTs S.S Dempo College of Commerce & Economics as Member assessed the college for the qualitative aspects(QIM) which comprises of 30% of the SSR, while 70% of the SSR comprising of quantitative aspects(QnM) is verified by Data Validation & Verification (DVV) process ofNAAC.

“The college is deeply indebted to Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA Meghalaya) for the help rendered to the college in every possible way for achieving accreditation from NAAC. The college would also like to give appreciation to Dr. Samuel R Lyndem, Resource Consultant, RUSA Meghalaya for the tremendous help in the preparation of the SSR and for all the guidance leading to Peer Team Visit,” said Principal Marak.

The administration would also like to thank all the stakeholders – Students, Parents and Alumni for actively taking part in the Peer Team Visit Not to forget the whole hearted participation of the Faculty – both Permanent and Part-Time and Non-Teaching Staff for being behind the college all the time, a statement from the college mentioned.

“I would also like to thank the Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills and Chairman, Tura Government College Advisory Committee and all the members for being wholeheartedly behind the accreditation process,” said the principal in his appreciation message while also expressing gratitude to chief minister Conrad K Sangma and the state government for its support.
