Shillong, Sept 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday confirmed that there are inputs and intel about the movement of some militant groups moving in the State, hence, stringent checking is being carried out in several districts.
Interacting with mediapersons, Sangma informed that it was based on inputs about movement of arms which led to the incident in Garo Hills on late Tuesday evening in which one militant was gunned down by police commandos.
Sangma said that he hasn’t looked at the official report but based on preliminary information, West Garo Hills Police received information that there were some movement of arms and information came in that it would come from that particular route.
“So police setup a naka checking and in that process an individual came in a bike with a bag and he immediately got off and took out the weapon and fired a few rounds. Luckily, the police were prepared and they retaliated. During the retaliatory firing, bullets hit the person and he succumbed to his injuries,” he informed.
The Chief Minister added that reports are still being collected; once it comes through then the Home Minister will be able to come out with a proper statement.
NDFB militants moving around in Meghalaya
Earlier, Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma had stated that NDFB militants are moving in Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills region.
To which, the chief minister responded that the government is very much aware of it. To specifically mention any group would not be appropriate right now without proper intel but he affirmed that movement is taking place. “Information is there with us but I do not want to name any organization right now,” he stated.
On Tuesday evening, an unidentified man opened fire at the police with an automatic rifle. He was shot dead in the ensuing gun battle by commandos near Sherwood School, on the outskirts of Tura.
