Heavy rainfall recorded across Meghalaya: Sohra & Mawsynram receive over 750mm of rainfall

Shillong, June 1: Heavy rainfall has been recorded across Meghalaya over the past five days, from May 28 to June 1, 2025. Several districts have experienced significant precipitation, with Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Mawsynram receiving cumulative totals of 796 mm and 774.5 mm, respectively. Other areas, including Khliehriat, RKM Sohra, and Pynursla, have also seen substantial rainfall, surpassing 500 mm in cumulative totals.

The highest single-day downpour was recorded in Ramakrishna Mission Sohra (RKM) Sohra on May 30, with 378.4 mm of rain, contributing to its total of 993.6 mm over five days. Similarly, Mawsynram and Pynursla saw their peak rainfall on May 30, accumulating over 250 mm in a single day.

Residents in affected areas have been adapting to the heavy rains, with local communities coming together to manage waterlogging and potential landslides. Farmers are expressing concerns about crop damage, while authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure safety. In some villages, people have been reinforcing their homes and clearing drainage paths to prevent flooding. Schools and businesses in certain regions have adjusted their schedules to accommodate the weather conditions.

Officials are urging residents to stay alert and follow weather updates, as continuous heavy rainfall could lead to further disruptions.

The resilience of the people in Meghalaya is evident as they navigate these challenging conditions, relying on community support and preparedness.
