Must read

Shillong, Sep 3: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the state government to immediately acquire land and release funds for the setting up of crematoria and cemeteries across the state.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh, in its order on Tuesday, said the government must act on the basis of a decision taken by the court-constituted Committee on August 27. The Committee had resolved to form district-level committees and move the state government to allocate funds for the purpose.

“Considering the importance and urgency of the issue, we direct the Committee to act with more speed. If district-level committees are required, let them be constituted as soon as possible, but they shall be strictly under the control of the Committee constituted under orders of this Court,” the bench observed.

The Court further directed the Committee to immediately approach the government for acquiring and allotting public land for crematoria and cemeteries. It also asked the Committee to hold frequent meetings to ensure different religious groups arrive at solutions for sharing facilities.

The Amicus Curiae has been instructed to submit a report before the next hearing of the PIL on October 23.
