Guwahati, March 1: Northeast India is set to experience a warmer and drier March, with above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall likely across the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest seasonal outlook.

The IMD’s monthly forecast indicates that maximum temperatures during March 2026 are likely to remain above normal over Northeast India, even as several other parts of the country may record normal to below-normal daytime temperatures.

Rainfall, however, is expected to be below normal over the Northeast, contrasting with the all-India outlook, which projects overall rainfall in the normal range (83–117% of the long-period average).

Forecast maps released by the IMD place the region in the “above normal” temperature probability zone, while the rainfall outlook categorises it under below-normal precipitation for March.

Looking beyond March, the department has projected above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures over most parts of the country during the March–May hot weather season, including large parts of the Northeast.

Although above-normal heatwave days are expected mainly over east and east-central India during the season, the IMD has warned that rising temperatures could strain water resources, agriculture, power demand and public health systems. Vulnerable groups — including the elderly, children and outdoor workers — may face heightened risks of heat-related illnesses.

State authorities and district administrations have been advised to strengthen preparedness measures, including ensuring adequate drinking water supply, health surveillance and response systems as the hot weather season progresses.

The IMD has urged the public to stay updated with forecasts and take precautions such as staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure during peak afternoon hours.
