HSPDP mulls cabinet post rotation ahead of possible reshuffle

Must read

Shillong, July 26: Amid speculation of an imminent Cabinet reshuffle in Meghalaya, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has confirmed it is considering rotating its lone Cabinet berth between its two legislators.

HSPDP president K.P. Pangniang on Friday said the party has initiated internal discussions on the matter, signalling a possible change in its ministerial representation within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) 2.0 government.

Currently, the HSPDP is represented in the Cabinet by Shakliar Warjri, who holds the Sports and Youth Affairs portfolio. However, pressure is mounting within the party to accommodate its second legislator, Methodius Dkhar, in a ministerial role.

“We are discussing the issue of Cabinet sharing. A final decision will be taken only after proper consultation with both our MLAs,” Pangniang told reporters. He clarified that the party has not yet taken up the matter with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, pending an internal consensus.

The timing of HSPDP’s move is significant. With the MDA government nearing the halfway point of its term, speculation is rife that a Cabinet reshuffle could take place as early as September.

Several coalition partners—including the NPP, BJP, UDP, and HSPDP—are believed to be pushing for a greater share of power.

While the MDA leadership remains tight-lipped, the buzz surrounding a reshuffle has only intensified, with parties like the HSPDP now openly positioning themselves for potential changes in the power structure.
