IIT Guwahati student found dead on campus; police suspect suicide

Guwahati, July 27: A third-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead on the institute’s campus on Sunday afternoon in an incident police are investigating as a suspected suicide.

The deceased, Ritesh Raj Singh, was a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student and a resident of the Brahmaputra Hostel.
According to police, Singh allegedly jumped from the fifth floor of an academic building at around 2.30 pm. He was declared dead after the fall.

Investigators said Singh had recently secured an internship with Goldman Sachs and was regarded by his peers as a bright student with an excellent academic record. The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained.

Kamrup Police have launched an investigation into the case.

Expressing grief over the student’s death, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said the institute was in close contact with Singh’s family and was extending all necessary support.

“It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the untimely demise of Ritesh Raj Singh, a third-year BTech student from the Computer Science and Engineering department and a resident of Brahmaputra Hostel. This is a profound loss to our IITG family. The Institute is in close contact with his family and is providing all necessary support during this difficult time,” Jalihal said.

The incident has once again brought student mental health into focus at the premier institute, which recorded four student suicides in 2024.
