Truck driver from Assam killed, two injured in late-night crash near Tura

Tura, July 27: A truck driver was killed and two others sustained injuries after a cement-laden truck crashed into a roadside mango tree near Aguragre village in West Garo Hills on Saturday night, police said.

The accident occurred at around 8.20 pm, following which personnel from Rongram Outpost rushed to the spot.

Police identified the deceased as Sofikul Islam, son of Golap Hussain, a resident of Mankachar in Assam. He was found dead inside the truck.Truck driver from Assam killed, two injured in late-night crash near Tura

The truck, bearing registration number AS-25-DC-7786, was carrying a load of cement when it rammed into a tree and was left precariously perched on the edge of a cliff.

Two occupants, Baneram Koch of Anandamath, Tura, and Sajen Paresh of South Salmara-Mankachar, suffered injuries and were admitted to Tura Civil Hospital for treatment. Another occupant, Shoriful Islam of Mankachar, escaped with minor injuries.

Police suspect the accident may have been caused by brake failure, although the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.

The damaged truck has been seized for investigation, while the body has been shifted to the Tura Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
