Shillong, May 6: Union Communications and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Tuesday inaugurated the 100th N-Gen Post Office of India Post at North-Eastern Hill University, marking a major milestone in the Centre’s push to modernise postal services and make them more relevant to younger users.
Inaugurated virtually, the revamped facility at the Shillong campus has been designed as a technology-enabled, youth-centric postal space catering to students, faculty members and campus residents.
The N-Gen initiative is part of India Post’s broader transformation drive, with redesigned post offices now being rolled out across IITs, IIMs, NITs and universities across the country, including institutions in the Northeast.
Speaking during the inauguration, Scindia said India Post was evolving alongside the aspirations of a young and digitally connected India, adding that traditional post offices were being reimagined as vibrant community and service hubs.
“What began six months ago with the revamp of the IIT Hauz Khas Post Office in Delhi has now reached the milestone of the 100th N-Gen Post Office,” he said, describing it as a “beautiful journey of transformation and participation.”
The Shillong facility includes free Wi-Fi, QR-based booking and payment systems, dedicated student service counters and concessional parcel and mail services. Officials said the initiative also seeks to revive letter writing culture while encouraging greater community interaction among students.
A key highlight of the NEHU post office is that it is entirely women-led. The facility has also incorporated locally sourced materials such as bamboo and straw, blending modern infrastructure with Meghalaya’s cultural and ecological identity.
Scindia said the project reflected the spirit of “by the students, of the students, and for the students,” with NEHU students actively contributing to the artwork and design of the space.
Shayontika Nandi, a fourth-year student involved in the design process, said the revamped post office adopted a next-generation theme inspired by Shillong’s reputation as India’s rock music capital. Another student, Sneha Das from the Department of Architecture, said the transformed space had made the post office more vibrant and engaging for students.
The minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for driving modernization, digital inclusion and citizen-centric governance initiatives that are reshaping India Post into a modern logistics and public service network.
