Guwahati, May 29: A scribe was allegedly beaten up inside his newsroom and the media office ransacked by a mob in Assam’s Silchar town on Thursday evening, raising further alarm bells over security of the scribes in the Barak Valley region.

The victim Raju Das, 26, a scribe and anchor at Silchar-based newspaper-cum-digital platform Barak Bani has filed an FIR at the Rangirkhari Police Station after the assault.

The assault took place around 7:30pm at the media office on the Second Link Road. Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal said that a case had been registered in this regard and one among them had been detained by the police.

“We have registered a case on the basis of the FIR. One of the accused has been detained. We are looking for other people through CCTVs”, Pal added. Raju told that the group of men first called him to know his whereabouts before storming his office. “When I told them that I was working here, they barged into the office and wanted to talk about something. All of sudden one of them started punching me wearing a brass knuckles. My nose was bleeding and I was almost falling unconscious. Colleagues intervened and I was saved,” the scribe narrated.

The proprietor of Barak Bani Nikhil Das alleged that the scribe had been receiving threats for the last few days over the news published about IPL gambling and other illegal activities. Silchar Press Club has expressed strong resentment over the incident and also appealed the state government for more protection to scribes. “The safety of scribes is now a major issue and such incidents have happened here time and again. The state government should implement special steps for security of the scribes. Recently many young scribes have faced assault,” said Shankar Dey, general secretary, Silchar Press Club. Police have been scanning the CCTV footage of the locality and other related areas to arrest all those responsible.
